Air Conditioners

Do you struggle with variable temperatures in your home?  Are the summer months far too hot?  Is the winter a miserable season of freezing nights? Does the air in your home cause your eyes, nose, and throat to scratch and itch every spring and fall? Then it might be time to consider getting an air conditioner, or better yet, and HVAC system!

Air conditioning is quickly becoming a must have home system. However most people don't realize that there are many different types of air conditioning systems, and all of them are incredibly complex.  The act of cooling down an internal space is incredibly difficult and power intensive.  Even the simplest of air conditioning devices is a marvel of modern egineering.

There are several different different types of air conditioning services, but the three main systems are: Central Air conditioners, heat pumps, Room Air Conditioners, and HVAC systems.

Central Air Conditioners:

A central Air conditioner is designed to cool the entire house that it is installed in. A central air conditioner consists of a large compressor unit which is located outside of the home.  This central unit is the driving force of the entire air conditioning system. There is also an indoor coil that is filled with a refrigerant. The refrigerant cools the air that passes through it, which is then distributed throughout the home through air ducts. Most central air conditioners are hooked up to the same duct system that a home already has in place for the furnace or heater.

Heat Pumps:

Heat pumps are similar to central air conditioners in that they have an outdoors central unit that drives the air conditioning process.  Unlike central air conditioners, heat pumps actually work as both an air conditioner (cooler) and a heater.  During the winter, or any cold season, the Heat Pump can be used in the reverse purpose to grab heat from outside the home to heat the inside. Heat pumps can be more energy efficient heat generators because the energy is used to move existing heat, not generate it.

Single Room Air Conditioners:

Single Room or Room Air Conditioners are smaller than central Air conditioners.  Their smaller size makes them available for mounting in windows or through walls.  While these units are smaller, they work in the same manner as larger air conditioning units. These smaller units are both inside and outside of the home so that the heat transfer can take place.  Room Air conditioners are designed to cool a single room, and as such are cheaper than central airconditioning units. However, because they can only handle a small area, you may need multiple units to heat your entire home.

HVAC:

An HVAC system includes air ducts, water, and fuel supply lines, electrical wiring, and a wide variety of mechanical components. The technician must be able to read, and follow blueprints, repair, and install HVAC systems, travel to the worksite, make any necessary connections, install controls, and wiring, determine what repairs are necessary, and keep HVAC systems operational. Without an operational HVAC system, commercial, and residential properties would be unable to control the indoor temperature.

HVAC Types:

The most common HVAC system is a split system. The HVAC components for this system are located both indoors, and outdoors. Each system contains an air conditioner, this cools the refrigerant responsible for cooling the building. The other components include an evaporator, or fan to circulate the air, a furnace, air ducts, and a thermostat. The split system works for both small, and large buildings, and homes.

A split hybrid HVAC system has become popular for homeowners. The difference between this type of system, and a traditional split system is the switch. This enables the homeowner to change between electricity, and gas. There is also a heat pump, so the refrigerant can be heated, or cooled as necessary. Additional components include the thermostat, air ducts, evaporator coil, and furnace. The switch saves energy, and money.
